When I was a little girl this:

was one of my very favorite books.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of books to get my nieces in Spain for x-mas. I feel like a lot of my favorites are a bit outdated. Their dad specified that the books be in English but I'm not sure how well they read in English (they speak English very well).

How old are they? The Penderwicks and The Mysterious Benedict Society are a coupe of my recent favorites. More so the MBS, but I suspect the Penderwicks would be better for kids.

I could be off on the ages...but I think the oldest is 10, the middle one is 8 and the youngest 5? something like that. I only get to see them once a year if that.

The Penderwicks would probably be perfect then because it is about a family with four girls, not too far from the ages. And there is a sequel, although I haven't read it. I gave the Penderwicks to a family of girls and they all liked reading it together.
